Bird's Eye Chicken Pies. Could Make A Dishonest Woman Of You...

Running round Regent's Park in the snow this morning got too much (too bloody cold), so we popped into the little cafe by the zoo for a cup of tea. Though we're in the park once a week, we have only been into the cafe once and that was before Christmas for a festive cappuccino. I don't usually have any money on me and always regret not doing so because the smell of the bacon and sausages drives me wild.

Today, as it was so cold I deliberately brought money with me knowing that we'd probably have to go there to huddle for warmth among the dog walkers and Regent's Park types who mooch their pugs and King Charles spaniels early doors. The cafe is called The Honest Sausage (see pic), it's very 1950s, but - and here's the rub - I don't think there's anything honest about it. The prices are outrageous.

So I thought I'd go for today's special. A pork and leek sausage in an 'organic' role. (Sauces on the table). At £3.65 I was expecting a large, floury bap packed with succulent sausages melting the butter beneath, with lashings of thick HP sauce.

What I got was a hot dog bun with one medium-sized sausage between its cheeks. For £3.60! I think £1.95 at an absolute push really. Of course, If I'd been in any other mood than tired and hungry I'd have said something. But I ate it, and very nice it was too.

I'm not entirely sure where this is going, but perhaps you'll pay anything for anything if you've a mind to do so. Perhaps that's why eBay's been such a success story.

Er, as you were.
