On my way home from a very enjoyable evening with the
TV Cream gang, I saw what I thought were a lot of homeless people in row along Piccadilly. I realised almost immediately that this was not a bunch of raggle-taggles but fans queueing for the final Harry Potter bookhttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gif. And in this weather! (It could have been homeless people though. I once saw one reading Danielle Steele's Message From Nam in Vauxhall tube station like they were tucked up in their own bedroom. All that was missing was a steaming mug of Bournvita).
Now, unlike some pals,
Red Sharlach, for example, I can take or leave Harry Potter. I've never read one of the books but I do like the films. I think the world created by JK Rowling is fantastically inventive and I only wish I'd thought of it myself. Mrs F-C and I resisted it for ages, and I poured generous amounts of scorn on adult readers of the novels, and even more people who might want to go and see a children's film. Until I saw the first one, Harry Potter And The Philosopher's Stone.
It was the day before I started the job I'm in now. It was a Sunday afternoon and we settled down to watch it. There was a huge thunderstorm, with heavy rain that lasted nearly the entirety of the film. It was perfect. And Hogwarts is rather like
my old school too, in the winter when it's darker in the right light. So I was converted. I shall be seeing the new film asap. But I still won't be reading the books though.
Anyhoo, back to those fans. What are they going to do now it's all over? Sharlach has her head in her hands. From Sunday her life is a barren wasteland with nothing to look forward too until Doctor Who returns (next year). What is she to do now? All suggestions welcome. PS, she doesn't do retro.
