I love you, hate you, love you, hate you, love you...

I have a fantasy about pubs and clubs in the early 70s. You know, the Wheeltappers type, somewhere you might perhaps find on a caravan park in Blackpool or 'down the Legion', or, loathe as I am to say it, the kind embodied in Phoenix Nights.

Fag smoke, swirly wallpaper, raffle, a turn or two, everyone in their finery for a night out. I never went to one of these places, not in the evening at least, so my fantasy is, the jukebox between 1970 and '75 might have looked something like this ipod playlist below (sorry, I don't know how to attach MP3s/4s or I would). It's easy listening, stuff brought back from holidays abroad, something slightly Eurovisiony, instrumentals, light country, some of those Fifties and Sixties rereleases that all made the charts again in the early 70s, and more. Club acts would probably have done their own interpretations of quite of few of these songs.

I was inspired to create this by the 1973 Top of The Pops chart rundown on the fantastic blog by Planet Mondo. Look! There's Wink Martindale (whenever I think of him I always think of his pic here, as do I Ringo Starr in the album), Perry Como, Max Bygraves, an Opp Knocks winner and others incongruously nuzzling up to Gary Glitter, Family, Bob Dylan, The Sweet and Mud, etc.

I'm glad I got that off my chest. But whatever you do, don't call it cheese!
