Sandwich Spread

Something I hate the smell of more than the taste. A bit like bananas or rice cakes. But Heinz Sandwich Spread I will never buy and never eat again.

Any long journey we took as children, whether it be to the beach in mum's Mini for the day (Boscombe was our manor) or family holidays in Devon, we always seemed to take Sandwich Spread sandwiches. Was there ever actually a need for this pointless filling?

I can't remember what was in it, but it was kind of like white dog sick, with crunchy bits of cucumber and carrot in it, and a slightly fizzy coleslaw-after-a-week-in-the-fridge tang to it. And it always made the car smell.

The reason this comes to me now is I just opened a draw and found an apple in it that has been there for some time. The smell made me think of the car on days out, and that made me think of sandwich spread and how ghastly it is. But perhaps the smell was the fruit and not the spread. Fruit left in the back of the car most of the day, bumping up against a slightly greasy thermos flask containing lukewarm milky coffee and Pennywise jam tarts (bagsy NOT have the apricot one).

Still, Sandwich Spread is not on my shopping list. And this is probably the least interesting post ever. Would it make a difference if I told you mum once had a craze on brandy snaps?

Now then, you leave that delicious comestible alone! I love it even today, and my granny once knitted me a cardi that actually looked like Sandwich Spread (not deliberately, mind). When I was in Madrid earlier this year, one of the 'specials' in a Spanish sandwich chain was - you guessed it - your least favourite savoury. I mean, I like it, but not as a special 'sur le continent'.

I used to quite like Toast Toppers, especially the chicken and mushroom one. However when I revisted it recently it went straight in the bin after one bite.

As for that cardy, Clair, it needs a public airing.

I had it when I was five, so if I sport it again, I'll look like a 'backward' child from a home. No change there, then...

....aaaand this isn't the most boring post ever. They're always on blogs that have the words 'ramblings', 'thoughts' or 'musings' in the subtitle.
