Talent shows

Had an amusing time at the launch of ITV1's new hope Britain's Got Talent last night. Ant & Dec, Simon Cowell, Amanda Holden and Piers Morgan were all in attendance. I was sceptical - yet ANOTHER talent show as if we don't have enough going on already, but actually I really enjoyed it.

The acts are as you'd expect. It's rather New Faces/Opportunity Knocks (the Hughie Green years), with dance troups, acrobats, piano-playing pigs and child comedians. All we needed was Tony Holland flexing to Wheels and it could have been 1975.

We were shown the first episode, and despite being a little too quick to race through the acts, it was great stuff. Funny and moving: there were tears from the attendees - those of a sensitive disposition should look away at the opera singer and especially the male baton twirler when this first show airs on Saturday.

Piers Morgan worried me beforehand, because I don't normally like him - I thought he was an arrogant tosser with absolutely no redeeming qualities whatsoever and someone desperate to be a star. I think that may be the general opinion, however his books are most entertaining and on this he's a breath of fresh air. And he was incredibly funny in the press conference which followed the screening. I think he could end up being quite loved. He's not afraid to speak his mind, which in the world of controlling PRs and copy approval couldn't be more welcome.

Anyway, loved the show, but with it being stripped nightly across two weeks it's unlikely I'll see it all. But I'll be watching when I can.

Shan't be watching. There are enough shows embarrassing talentless no-hopers, and preparing talented people for an entertainment business that has no room for them as it is.

And whilst it's nice that Piers can be all carefree as to what he says, I dare any other public figure without his contacts book to try it and see where it gets them

I know what you're saying.

The winner of this show performs at the Royal Variety Performance. And then....

It's time to revive 3-2-1 or there'll be no showcase for their talents.
