This song makes the world a nicer place

Who remembers New World? They were the 1971 folk-pop trio behind hits like Tom Tom Turnaround, Sister Jane and my personal favourite Kara Kara. I can't find anything about them anywhere, but I remember as child I had Tom Tom Turnaround on one of those Hot Hits albums, probably the one featuring the woman with the Tammy Wynette hair in a white bikini and cricket pads (indeed my personal favourite) on the cover. Hot Hits were always racier than Top Of The Pops, and the hit selection was better.

Anyhoo, listening to Kara Kara on my way into work today and its quasi-religious Kumbaya-effect liltiness, folk guitars duelling amid Roger Whittaker-esque lullaby vocals put me in mind of sunsets over calm seas. Most relaxing. While it's still going round my head I thought I'd write it down.

Tom Tom Turnaround, which appears to be the story of a young indian brave and Sister Jane, about some maneater, and not as nun as I'd very much hoped, are fine and not dissimilar too. But at the end of the day the whole New World world is rather twee. I wonder if they ever played them in a disco. Kara Kara followed by Yellow River, Tweedle Dum Tweedle Dee, Candida, Blame It On The Pony Express. Forget the rock disco - it's the 1970/71 disco!

I've been watching New World on the ITV3 repeats of the Two Ronnies, and finding the whole thing the most dated experience ever.

My current raves from the grave are I'm Gonna Run Away From You by Tami Lynn and H.A.P.P.Y. Radio by Edwin Starr. Funktastic!

I like that Tammy Lynn one, but Edwin Starr reminds me of the roller rink at Eastleigh Leisure Centre. That and I Will Survive. Which I nearly didn'nt.

Must look out for NW on the Two Ronnies though.
