Yawn!

Does anyone actually take any notice of this sort of thing anymore?

I stopped buying Q years ago as soon as it started becoming a mag' of lists. Predictable and pointless.

I'll guess these are top 10 before I read it.

Nevermind (or in the 20)
Pet Sounds
Revolver
London Calling (probably comes higher than Nevermind the Bollocks too)
Sgt Pepper
A Rap/Hip Hop album

Lieutenant Pigeon are on that list! Honestly, it's just another one of those 'stick the classics in, plus some left-field ones that make us look like the clever-clogs we are'.

I couldn't be less interested. Is anyone actually interested? I really mean it. Out there in the world of the Guardian readership, is anyone actually doing anything more than cursorily skimming these supplements? The joke is, it's actually fairly time-consuming to produce these things. Somebody has to compile the list, the capsule reviews have to be commissioned and called in, and subbed, and although most of the writers are probably on contract, some won't be, and will have to be paid. And for what?

I think once you pass the stage of going through Q's 100 albums of the year, and realising that you've got about two of them, you don't care. These lists are for people who need their tastes validated.

It seems to me we get one of these a week. They're utterly meaningless.

I was at university with the Guardian's Alexis Petridis (or Petri-Dish as we predictably used to call him). In his covering piece for that list, he even says it's all pretty arbitrary so, errr, what is the point? However, he also says he loves Lal Waterson, so he presumably wins a few Five-Centres points for that.

I'm amused that he seems to be looking increasingly like Mr Bean, though.
