Still rather tired and fractious

Feeling much better today after an early night and some proper food. Sadly I missed out on what promised to be a fun get-together with The Woo and Planet Mondo, but I just wasn't up to it. So we'll reconvene in the New Year I hope.

I'm A Celeb... brushed by me again last night, and I just don't care for it. Am I alone? There are certain things it seems everyone likes but me.

For example:

Danny Baker. Pub bore with a lisp. Everyone else is really excited he's back on the radio this weekend, but I'd rather sit in silence.

Football. Leaves me totally cold. I'm not from a football supporting family - though my brother is the worst kind of middle-class Chelsea supporter. I tried to like it, and almost got semi-interested around the 1990 World Cup, when everyone got interested. But it wasn't to last. I've got other things I'd rather be doing. Fanaticism about it seems to have definitely dropped off this season on the whole, so that's a good thing. Must be cos England were no great shakes last year and everyone got over 'footy'. I hate how it's been totally taken over by the chattering classes.

Rice pudding. Everyone thinks everyone likes it. I don't, and neither does Mrs F-C. The skin that forms, the very thought of rice swollen in milk. It makes me gag just to think about it.

Gavin & Stacey. It's not just this, it's all comedy. I have a problem with it that I won't find it funny. I can't be forced to laugh at something, it's a terrible pressure. I tend to come late to comedy shows, and watch them at my leisure. Then I can decided in my own time whether it's funny or not. Don't hassle me on this one, otherwise I shall sit stony-faced throughout.

Praline. When did it happen that praline took over the chocolate world? I don't like it. I like fruit-flavoured soft centres, montelimar, marzipan etc. I'm a traditionalist. Praline is not classy or sophisticated, it's just horrid.

Walks. If you've got a dog or a child, fine. If not, why are you bothering. Dull, cold and tiring. I'd rather have a sit down. I'm not mad on picnics either.

I agree with you on all of those, except rice pudding, which I do love (I always order it on restaurant menus if it's available).

Walks are only acceptable if you are somewhere scenic and there's a pub at the end of it.

Outdoor eating in general is a mystery to me. I'm always seeing people in Brighton sitting grimly outside cafes, desperately trying to gobble down a plate of scalding lasagne before it goes stone cold. They might be fooling themselves they're in Rome, but they're not fooling me.

I like rice pudding though, especially with lemon peel and cinnamon.

I'm with you on 3,4 and 5. If you like 2, it makes number 1 a little bit easier to like as well. I do like Baker a lot and he is one of the few broadcasters out there that can talk to absolutely any member of society without coming across as either awkward, patronising or stupid. You live in the city so you're not likely to get walking.

Yeah! (except football)
Rice pudding reminds me of the worst of school dinners.

Barbecues totally puzzle me? Why, at the slightest hint of sunshine, does everyone want invite gormless twatbags to cook scabby sausages about five yards away from their kitchens, and keep their saintly neighbours awake until 3am with their terrible music.. GAH!

Indeed I am, OP. Glad this week's on the way out.

Away with you, rice pudding eaters.

One word: churl!

I disagree with you on every point except Gavin & Stacey, which I've never seen.

I don't mind football-haters as long as they're consistent, and you are.

Baker? Always been a London-centric broadcaster to me. I find him admirable in many ways, but hard to listen to.

Rice pudding is superb, including the skin. Yummy.

While I liked Gavin and Stacey, I didn't like it enough to defend it, and I'll let you have all the others, but your antipathy to Baker and walking are more problematic. When others were doing the 'Spangles, hur hur' and 'Hey, Bagpuss is teh drggzzz' TWKON nostalgia referencing shite, Baker was intolerant of people who laughed at George and Mildred because of the out-dated clothes. When hipsters were donning ironic teryline, he defended the best of the recent past for the best possible reasons. Also, University of Turmoil and the fact that he makes 606 interesting to someone who doesn't give a shit about football. I ruddy love 'im.

When I'm in London nowadays, I leave enough time between appointments to walk, whenever possible. Walking and cycling help me keep off the 2.5 stone I lost last year.
