And would you like to see my tits as well?

I caught up with an episode of Not The Nine O'Clock News I Sky+ed last night. I used to love that show. It started when I was about 14 and I'm pretty sure I watched every one. It was so racy. it was all the rage at school, we recited every sketch for weeks afterwards. I always lump it in with Blankety Blank, XTC and my pet rabbit Mrs Perkins. But that's an aside.

The episode I watched must have been from early '82 or late '81, the clue being Rowan Atkinson as Marc Almond being interviewed by Pamela Stephenson as someone whose name escapes me this morning, but who was very much of the time.

It's still funny, but it would be a complete mystery to anyone under the age of 30. Sketches about Judith Hann, Janet Street-Porter, That's Life! and Angela Rippon, are meaningless to those who weren't around at the time or have an interest in TV history. I remembered everyone single frame.

Then I watched a Kenny Everett Television Show (still prefer the Thames logo-crashing Video Show), which featured B.A. Robertson, who would mean even less. When are they going to put out B.A.'s greatest hits? Anyhoo, it was funnier than I thought it would be. Everyone used to love Cupid Stunt and Sid Snot, didn't they.

By the bypass, I saw Mel Smith on Celebrity Mastermind over Christmas and I was shocked at his appearance and his voice. Has he had a stroke? Does anyone know?

I saw Jason Watkins on the Tube this morning.

I think Pamela Stephenson is meant to be Annie Nightingale in the Marc Almond sketch.

Yes! That's it. Her impression was so poor though, it would have taken me ages to get it if 'Marc' hadn't called her Annie.

Sorry Kitten, I know where you're coming from, but I'm thinking of future traffic here.

Marc Almond is still quite bitter about that skit on him, if the snarky comments in his autobiography were anything to go by. Which shows a) an amazing capacity to hold a grudge and b) what an influential show it was at the time.

The quote is "and would you like to rub my tits too?", pedantry fans. Good work on the thread title though, as there's ample (arf) traffic to be had there.

I love NTNO'CN too. It tells the story of late 70s and early 80s Britain better than anything else in political or popular archive. I still hear the Blair Peach gag from their spoof news bulletins and wonder how the hell they got away with it...

Many great clips on the tube of you. I did find the Morcambe & Wise repeat sadly dated......

I wondered about Mel Smith too. He sounds like he has a cleft palate, which is clearly something you're born with.
Apparently, after doing some research when Mastermind finished, last year Rhys Jones announced that Smith had Parkinson's. Whether that's got anything to do with the state of his voice, I know not.

I bought the two available DVDs couple of years go and could quote every sketch line for line, having not seen it for years and years - I never understand why it seems to have dropped off the comedy radar as most of the performers, writers, producers went on to bigger and better things..

Do you remember the Channel Four version Who Dares Wins?

Who Dares Wins wasn't a patch on NTNO'N, though was it. I watched it nonetheless, but the performers were far less engaging. I remember the opening credits with someone walking home with a Chinese takeaway in a paper bag that splits on the doorstep.

I agree with you on NTNON, but not on Kenny Everett, which I found unwatchable even as a teenager. It didn't even raise a smile - far too broad for me, like a marginally hipper Benny Hill.

I did like Who Dares Wins though. Whoever put it together was good at talent-spotting, as I seem to remember it was the launching pad for Tony Robinson, Angus Deayton, Philip Pope and Rory McGrath. It never gets repeated, though.

There must be 'issues' over that TT. I was wondering why it's never been repeated.

Yes, something did happen to Mel Smith, but it wasn't a stroke. The has gout and as a result became dependent on pain pills.

I don't know is he's improved or not.

Oh... and Wikipedia says he had a throat infection when he was on Mastermind.
