A welcome in the hillsides

I'm off to Cardiff today. No, I'm not guesting in the forthcoming Doctor Who specials, silly, but it is for work.

So as I've not been able to find my song du jour, Somewhere My Love by the Mikes Sammes Singers, here they are soundtracking a great old Fine Fare ad set, naturally, in a new town.

Brilliant. I want to live there. I think the women are called Susan and Betty.

Although I get the feeling that isn't an actual advert - just some ace generic 1970s footage and a photo of some Fine Fare doors lashed to an original jingle.

We had a Fine Fare in my hometown, which later became a Kwik Save, but they never got rid of the Fine Fare style doors seen in the video. They may even still be there now.

Whither Lipton's?

Didn't Lipton's become Gateway then Somerfield, or was that Fine Fare.

We used to go to a Fine Fare in Southampton with my grandma. Always nice biscuits.

We need some sort of supermarket family tree. Where does International stores fit in?

Didn't International merge with Kelsall?

And what about VG, Wavy Line and Maid Marian?

International were Nice People with Nice Prices. But saving at Fine Fare gave you the best from life, so no contest really.

International and Wallis where the first new supermarket where I lived,
VG and Mace were always run by old ladies and Liptons seemed a bit weird and otherworldly

Good for Spar and Co-op for hanging on on there...I've got a copy of It's All At the Co-op now if you want a copy FC

When Mrs PM was working at Prestos back in the 80s - someone died, literally, just dropped dead while shopping there, so the management had to rustle up a makeshift 'incident tent' from two revolving tights racks and a blanket until the emergeny services arrived - where's the dignity in that..

I've just had a sudden thought - the real reason you're going to Cardiff is because you're joining Torchwood.

How's Kitten In A Brandy Glass going to react to that?

I think the real question is, how is FC going to react when he's obliged to snog John Barrowman?

Our fine fare (ff) turned into a Shoppers Paradise. But only figeratively mind you. Gordon Jackson used to advertise fine fare.

That is, of course, Stevenage New Town.I am probably in the background, knee-high to a grasshoppper. We had a Fine Fare, and also a tiny Maypole store which then became Liptons. The big treat was going to the International Stores up the road in Hitchin.

First snog out the way. Bring it on
