Keep Calm & Carry On

So today, Me, David Yip, Parker Stevenson, Lou Macari, Bob Champion, Philip Olivier, Michelle Phillips, Prince Michael Of Kent, Freddy Fender, Bruce Dern, Angelina Jolie, Russell Brand, Bill Treacher, Dr Ruth Westheimer, Geoffrey Palmer, Debra Stephenson, James Callis, Noah Wyle, Dennis Weaver, Sean Pertwee, Bradley Walsh and Degrassi’s Shane Kippel, are all going out for lunch.

Why? Because it's our birthday.

Do join us.

But first, let's take a look back at selected F-C birthdays of yesteryear.

1974, aged nine: Dad took me, two friends, my brother and his friend to HMS Victory in Portsmouth. There's a lovely picture of us standing in front of it, me in a red polo neck - in June! Then it was all back to ours for hot dogs, which was awfully hip at the time, but we had American neighbours.

1979, aged 14: Me and a pal had a barbecue and sleepover in tents at my house. We invited all the boys in our class. Things were soured somewhat by my dad finding the giant can of Hoffmeister he'd hidden in our garage. We were awake most of the night singing what we considered to be rude songs. We kind of drifted apart after my dad made him take it back to Spar.

1983, aged 17: I was at boarding had two friends with the same birthday as me, so we all went out to Clouds in Cranley, which did burgers and things and got very drunk indeed. Gifts included the 12" of In A Big Country by Big Country, and, er, Flashdance by Irene Cara.

1985, aged 20: Uni had broken up, I was staying down in Southampton in a house with some friends. We were all doing temping jobs that were awful. At this time I was reorganising the B&Q show warehouse with a knob who was a student elsewhere and who sat and ate chips in his car at lunchtime on his own. Anyhoo, me and my housemates went for a curry, which at the time I wasn't that struck on, but it was so nice I became a curry convert. What a lovely birthday present.

1990, aged 25: Mrs F-C was on the scene by now and she and several friends, only about two of whom I still see now went to the now defunct Rock Island Diner in Picadilly Circus. It was Fifties-style diner where suddenly staff would get up and sing and dance like you in Grease or something. You were encouraged to do the same. Then I thought it was the most brilliant thing. Now it would be my idea of Hell.

1993, aged 28: I did something I never do and booked part of a room in a pub and invited lots of disparate friends who didn't know each other and fretted all day that none of them would turn up. They did, but it I didn't enjoy it. Like a party, you speak to everyone for about five minutes and that's kind of it.

That's it for this year. Thank you for your good wishes.

Happy birthday FC! I hope Spindles will be breaking out the complimentary Liebfraumilch in celebration, and digging around for the birthday candles to stick in a Black Forest Gateau.

Thanks Kitten. Spindles will be closed the private party. Angelina Jolie and Dennis Weaver will be doing Islands In The Stream on the karaoke, and Michelle Phillips is in charge of canapes. She's a super cook, I hear.

See you there.

Happy Birthday F-C. Spam fritters for birthday tea perhaps?

You're nine years older than me. Not much older then. Do make the best of the nicest weather for a while, if forecast is to be believed.
Also: Geminis rule. X

Nine years to the day, RE? When's you birthday?

Suzy Norman said...

Not til the 18th for me.

I love those birthday lists. Angelina Jolie and Bill Treacher in the same breath.

Well happy birthday then. I shall eat a cake tonight in your honour after voting.

Sounds like one hell of an invite list there.

I'd also say Geminis rule, as it means I have something in common with people I admire. Happy birthday F-C!

When's yours Matt?

Happy birthday. I have vague memories of coming to a party of yours or maybe organised by you for Jim ... does that sound right? I share my birthday with Miriam Karlin (her of the Rag Trade), that's about as glam as it gets for me.

Happy Birthday FC how about a Spam Curry go on treat yourself - and if you fancy getting yourself a little birthday something I really can't recommended this album enough. Trust me you'll love it - it's the sound of your favourite era

I see the Spam jokes have been made already so it's just 'Happy Birthday' then... Happy Birthday!

Happy birthday to you.

Happy birthday.

I like your rememberances of birthday's past. I once asked my grandmonther, on her 83rd birthday at a big family meal, what was her best birthday ever - thought she'd have a wide range of choice. She said "this one, right now with all my family." I thought that was really nice of her. Looking back I realise she was just playing the crowd. But still.

Mine was on May 24th, F-C. I'm 36 now and still looking boyish for it. No, I am.

Jon Peake said...

Nice of Grandma Dan, but not very imaginative.

It's true Matt, you are boyish. Wait til you hit 40 and everything changes.

Oh lucky you, a summer birthday! Hope you are having a delightful evening. I just raised a glass to you. I was raising it anyway, but it's the thought that counts, innit?

Happy birthday, F-C!

And to celebrate, what better than your friend and our's, Fiona Phillips on tonight's Question Time?

Have a great birthday. Been lurking around for a while, and I like your blog: found it via Clair's.

I'm Scottish and share a birthday with Jimmy Hill. Puts that Bradley Walsh into perspective, doesn't it?

Thanks everyone, regulars, lurkers, etc. How kind.

I saw about a minute of Fiona Phillips on Question Time, but knew that if I saw anymore I'd be worked up into a fury, not what one wants on one's birthday.
