Five From Five Friday

Nothing much to talk about today, and I'm off for a big long lunch, so as it's Friday, let's see what's currently cluttering up the F-C ipod.

First here's the Les Humphries Singers with their German 1972 No.2 Mexico. I think Les Humphries must be British - with a name like that he should have been on at the Batley Variety Club, but it seems he sought his fortunes on the continent instead. Try telling the singers from the TOTP-style crowd.

Now there's Sealed With A Kiss hitmaker Brian Hyland with his (dont' quote me) 1970 hit Gypsy Woman. Takes some getting used to, but it's dreamy, Silvikrin woman-leading-horses-through-sun-dappled-forests stuff.

Look! Here's something modern! It's Clap Your Hands Say Yeah with a nice bit of retro electronica Over and Over Again (Lost and Found).

From Australia, obviously, 1983, here's one for Cocktails. It's the driving power pop of Dragon with the excellent Rain.

Hankies at the ready for this next one, about a dog who's died. It's former Sha-Na-Na singer Henry Gross with the 1976 US Top Ten hit Shannon.

I really like that Clap Your Hands Say Yeah track. Is that David Byrne or just someone that sounds like him?

Haven't heard that Dragon song for a long time. Think I prefer the 'classic' (ha!) 'Take Me to The April Sun in Cuba' though.

BTW, Wil has just posted his superb 70s 'at home from school ill' playlist on my site. You must look!

True, but I was hoping to try to lure a few others out with me, too. Anyway, you're gone now, so I'll just get on with it.

Les Humphries is a peach - I picked it up on 7" for 50p at this years Leigh Folk Festival.. The chap in the black suit and outsize tie looks slightly satanic, and him with the gringo moustache looks like a long distance lorry driver on the run. Why are they all clapping out of time?

I thought the same thing cocktails, but as far as I'm aware, he's nowhere to be seen.
