Same old same old

I shall be attending an awards ceremony this evening that to honour the great and the good of the magazine world. There'll be nothing for me. My magazines aren't even on the radar. It's the same old story. Heat, Closer, anything from Natmags, bit and pieces of IPC nonsense, the Radio Times (yawn), some contract mags you've never heard of and Nuts.

Nothing for anything un-sexy basically. It's rather tiresome always to read about the same mags and mag personnel being praised to the rafters. I mean, good for them, they probably deserve it, but often it's by default. That said, the Heat love-in which raged for years now seems to be on the wane. Radio Times is slowly committing suicided and Closer is just which celeb can we beat to death about their weight this week?

It's interesting to see what the next big thing will be. Only recently men's weeklies were the future, but this seems to have peaked rather quickly. For my money, it's the over 55s. Much-ignored, but there in force. Ignore them at your peril. But again, these are unsexy, so even if one was launched that was a roaring success, everyone would still be wanking over Heat.

I see Mark Frith won again. What for? 'Increasingly tired magazine that PRs fawn all over, Emperor's New Clothes Award?'

You should have seen him posing with his award. Everyone else humbly held theirs in their hands, he crossed his arms and held his across his chest while pouting. It was sick-making. The whole room laughed.

But yes, it was the usual suspects up for stuff. Another year, another love-in.

I went to that awards one year with a friend who went for the Heat ed's job - he didn't get it, but congratualted Mr F, who ignored him. Nice.

And let's not forget the Heat team's behaviour when they lost that UKTV telly quiz a few years ago...
