I was surprised to discover recently that singer Hazel O'Connor was married for a time to journalist Danny Kelly, you know, he does the footy on the radio, ex-editor of NME. Yes, that Danny Kelly. Is this actually true, or is it a Wikipedia anomaly?
Anyhoo, I'm rather partial to a bit of Hazel O'Connor. Will You, of course, is marvellous, and Eighth Day and D-Days stick in the brain. Other minor hits like Cover Plus (We're All Grown Up), Give Me An Inch and others make for a worth-every-penny greatest hits, should you be in the mood.
Her finest hour is Breaking Glass, though. Why isn't this on DVD. A dear friend very kindly burned me off a copy, but there's nothing official. It's a real timepiece, a great rock movie and should have a wider airing. It's never on the telly either. There's nothing more engaging that a British film about rock.
Hazel herself gives me more of a problem, as I think she may take herself a little too seriously. About 20 years ago she was in a series set in Bristol with Charlie from Casualty. She was trying just that bit too hard in it, with the accent and the angst. She got good reviews for it though, and she's not a bad actress at all, so why did the work dry up?
Come back to us Hazel, will you?
