Let's talk about the McCanns

Or perhaps not. Like many Five Live listeners, you may not think it's an appropriate subject for debate. However, it is fascinating and that's the problem.

In the thirst for news on this case, one doesn't know what to believe. The papers say one thing, the internet another, the TV something else and Portugal something different again. So much misinformation.

It doesn't look good for them as it stands. So are they being set up? I'm mystified as to why anyone would want to do this to them, except for the Portuguese police to get a quick result. If that's the case, how quickly fortunes can change. In the blink of eye, you find yourself rotting in a foreign prison.

Are they innocent? If so, there's little chance of a normal life for the foreseeable future. The press frenzy is unlikely to abate for quite some time. How could they ever extricate themselves from the spotlight? And what will they tell the twins?

Did they do it? If so, we've all been had. (except for the 'well, I always knew there was something odd about it. She's hard as nails, why leave the twins on their own and meet the Pope just days later, etc, etc' barmy army). If it was an accident, better to come clean sooner rather than later?

The way things are going, this will be an ITV drama starring Joanne Froggatt (who always plays the victim) and Richard Coyle, with a host of faces as Team McCann. Before the end of the year, probably.

It's a circus. But aren't you dying to know what's going to happen in the end?

Not exactly the same scenario, but ITV1 are bringing us a drama called Torn some time soon. Holly Aird plays a mother whose four-year-old daughter disappeared on a beach holiday. Twelve years later she catches sight of a girl she is convinced is her daughter...

According to the ITV press office, it's 'inspired by recent true cases'. I wonder if it will still be shown if the McCann case stays in the headlines?

It's on next week - I think it's all still going ahead.

I can't believe they did it. What horrors would they be? I don't like the dad, though; he's got a hugely arrogant air.

I've said this right from the start: THEY SHOULD NOT HAVE LEFT THOSE KIDS ALONE IN A STRANGE APARTMENT WHILE THEY WERE OUT WHOOPING IT UP.

And I don't like the dad either.

I wonder if they got stuck in all the traffic coming out of Donington Park (next door to East Midlands Airport) on Sunday afternoon or did they get hurried along the hard shoulder of the M1 with a police escort?

The dad is cold, that's for sure.

He's a Cardiologist. I don't want to generalise, but they're all like that.

I'm afraid I'm with the "I always thought there was something a bit odd about the whole situation" brigade. I also admit that I am keen to find out whodunnit and I am sure that there will be a made-for-tv-film out very soon based on the whole episode.

while i'd hate to sound really judgemental, i always though it was a bit odd that they stayed so calm and composed when doing their huge media search thing. i also think it's weird for them to want to stay in portugal. i'd've wanted to get my kids home to their family asap. and yes, the pope thing was odd too.

but then, the portugese police seem to have guffed this one up from the beginning so i wouldn't be surprised if they were clutching at straws, put two and two together and came out with blood in a car boot…

who knows, eh. but i am fascinated (for all the wrong reasons).

ps: remember joanne lees? arrested and charged for the murder of her bloke peter falconio in australia? even though they eventually found her innocent, she's always had a stigma attached to her. even if the mccanns are eventually found innocent something tells me they'll have to live with suspicion for the rest of their lives…

That's the thing - being cold and emotionless does no one any favours. Joanne Less as you say Madge, and let's not forget Lindy 'A dingo ate my baby' Chamberlain. But as she said, 'I can't cry to order'. Everyone's different.
