Paris is one day away (in 1982, but not these days)

No new post yesterday. Why not? I went to Paris.

It was just for the day, as part of ongoing work-related celebrations, for lunch at the Eiffel tower. I have to say, I was dreading it, but actually it turned out to be a lot of fun, despite the early start and some behaviour verging on the boorish.

Now, I don't recall ever having been up the Eiffel tower, despite countless visits to the City of Light. I'm sure I would have remembered it, because it's got to be one of the most impressive feats of engineering ever, and it's absolutely vast. So we had lunch in the Jules Verne restaurant on the second floor, with its great views and great service, and its so-so food. The decor was like a dream to me, black triangles and lots of smoked glass, black padded walls with peephole diamond-shaped windows. In was like lunching in an episode of Thriller.

But it's still amazing, isn't it, how quickly one can be on the continent. I stood under the tower chanting 'I am in Paris! I am in Paris!' to myself, just so I could savour the moment of actually being there. It was all so fast, it was a case of blink and you've missed it.

So back down to earth now. Still, I'm looking forward to seeing the Zombies tonight, and going to the Empire Awards on Sunday. Believe me, the fun never stops.

Ooh, the Empire Awards, how glamorous. I'm very, very jealous - how did you wrangle an invite to them then?

Any chance I could accompany you in place of Mrs F-C?

It's a work-related thing, Amy, so sadly partners not invited anyway!

I went to Paris for a week with school when I was 14 during a bin man strike in France. There were piles of rubbish 10 feet high and rats everywhere. I'm afraid first impressions have lasted and I've never been back.

Really should do something about that.
