That's special!

Pottering around Sainsbury's yesterday lunchtime (the Camden one seems not to suffer from a) overt pikeyness, and b) the lack of stock that makes it look like Moscow circa 1979), I noticed the cup-a-soups and was immediately transported back to student life in the mid-Eighties.

Everyday when I came home I would have a cup-a-soup. Always Batchelor's (who else), and always the ones with the croutons in, which was quite a new invention back then. I would also dip salt 'n' vinegar crips in it and frankly, it was delicious. I was reed-thin back then, pre-glandular fever, size 30 waist, lying awake a night praying with all my might that I would put some weight on, so I could eat anything bad and it wouldn't make a jot of difference. Be careful what you wish for is all I can say about that.

Anyhoo, I've not touched a cup-a-soup in over 20 years as I soon went off it. If you have something every day it no longer becomes a treat and you get sick of it. I've done the same thing with so many foods, it's a wonder there's anything left I do eat. I used the like chicken and leek one too, with the old woman on the box.

This post was going to be things that remind me of being a student, but I got sidetracked at Cup-A-Soup. Still, there are worse sidings to be in.

Here's an old ad to enjoy:

I used to go through all sorts of mandibular gymnastics so that I could ensure the croutons remained at the bottom and could slip down with the last mouthful. It'd never be as good if I tried it now.

I too lived on the things in my student days. Now they are like Proust's madeleine to me: I just have to smell a Cup-A-Soup and I can feel the essay deadline anxiety taking hold...

"Pikeyness"? What? People on low incomes go into supermarkets?
