Screen Won

Empire magazine are doing a 500 greatest films poll here.

It's a good one, because Empire readers being genuine film fans (with a slightly suspect leaning toward comic-book adaptations and big-budget blockbusters), this should be a poll worth looking at. I believe the last time they did The Shawshank Redemption topped the chart. That is indeed one of my favourite films, but I'm not going to vote for it again as it's getting almost as cliched as Citizen Kane.

At least though, there's unlikely to be a Titanic or a Bee Movie in there. I hate those short memory polls where the number one is what was big earlier in the year. Give it two years and it's all but forgotten. Thank God they never made a film out of Bohemian Rhapsody.

So in yet another me, me, me post, here's what I'm voting for. It's hard to whittle, but I think I've done it. Based on how many times I can bear to watch them, this is it.

1. Midnight Cowboy.
2. Edward Scissorhands
3. St Elmo's Fire
4. Blue Velvet
5. Ordinary People
6. Annie Hall
7. The Commitments
8. Lost In Translation
9. Misery
10. Don't Look Now

Bubbling under: The Shining, Up The Junction, A Kind Of Loving, Days Of Wine Of Roses, Woodstock, Rosemary's Baby, Race With The Devil, Sideways, Pretty In Pink, Charly, Baby Boom, This Sporting Life

Interesting, but I'm sorry you might have to elucidate on your fondness for The Commitments. I saw it when it came out (I think) and I can't even bear the thought of hearing any of those songs again. I just don't get it...
