On Pluto

Already this morning I've had a Marmite crumpet and a cheese scone. A rhubarb yoghurt and two cups of tea, not to mention to tumblers of water and a banana and it's not even 10 o'clock yet.

I'm terribly hungry in the mornings. But that's good because after all, breakfast fuels the furnace for the day. I don't know about you, but once I left home I never used to have breakfast at all. I couldn't even entertain the idea of food so early in the morning. It was only when I went back to college to do my journalism course I thought I'd better eat something as I didn't know when the next chance to eat would come.

I remember that first morning: hot buttered toast with Rose's lime marmalade. I kept this up for the duration of the course.

I don't know what I was thinking. As chronicled before around these parts, I don't even like jam. Okay, marmalade, but it's still sweet and I'm really not a sweet tooth in the a.m. I'm far more savoury. Why didn't I have Bovril on it, or peanut butter? I've not touched lime marmalade since.

I remember when you'd go on holiday and one of the breakfast choices was 'continental', i.e., no bacon or egg. It usually meant chewy croissants or a sweet roll and little pots of nasty jam. There wasn't much savoury about it and that always put me off. But that seems to have changed now. I love those German and Scandanavian buffets. That sort of continental is my breakfast of choice.

You can't beat a fry-up of course, with lashings of Daddies brown sauce, and there's always room for a bacon or sausage sandwich in my life. But if I had to choose between serial or bread and cheese, it would be the latter that got my vote. Cereal's a bore and a chore.

Thank God our breakfast option are more varied than they used to be. Now you can pop into any Pret, Eat or Greggs and have a ham and mozzarella croissant (still can't say it properly) or a cheese and onion pasty straight from the oven. I'm all for it. I could eat breakfast foods all day. Has anyone been to a Leon? What do they do?

Anyway, that's it from me until next week. Enjoy your breakfast.

This morning it was Special K with chocolate and strawberries in it. But I do love a good fry up and will even admit to the occasional Bacon McMuffin. I can't get going without something in the morning - not drinking tea or coffee I need something to kick-start the brain.

I agree. Breakfast is the best meal of the day. I never miss it.

I don't do 'sweet' either in the morning, and because I'm a complete pig, I can't be doing with the old croissants and jam schtick. You need something more filling in the morning. Like scrambled eggs on a toasted bagel or good old porridge - my current faves.

Leon is my very favourite restaurant of its kind - it has the sort of stuff that you'd like to make for yourself at home. Some are open in the evenings, too, and it's a very civilized and homely option. I love absolutely everything on the menu, especially their aloo gobi and meatballs, and cookies. In fact, I think I'm off there right now, as I could eat a scabby dog...

I'm with you on the Scandinavian Banquet Breakfasts, F-C. They really can keep me going happily until lunchtime. But not having time when at home to line up a parade of ham, cheeses, sliced peppers, tomatoes, various dark breads, eggs done four ways, French toast and frankfurters, I tend to opt for porridge. This morning, I had mine with raspberries and a little maple syrup. Yum yum, pig's bum.

Leon are fab - it all tastes so fresh. Breakfast for me is savoury for hang overs, sweet for normal. With weekend treats of cakes or biscuits in bed while reading..

PS here are those Michael Chapman doing Bowie before Bowie type-tunes (with Mick Ronson on guitar)

I'm jealous we don't have a Leon in Camden. Yet. I'm going to lobby for one.

Thanks for those tunes Mondo.

Everyone here seems to be ravenous. I've just eaten three M&S chocolate teacakes.

And I've just had a Welsh cake and a chocolate finger. There's no stopping me today.

In our house those M&S chocolate teacakes were always called 'marshmallows'. Or 'Caroline's marshmallows' because, for some reason, my sister had a thing for them.

My friend and I were recently discussing about how involved with technology our daily lives have become. Reading this post makes me think back to that debate we had, and just how inseparable from electronics we have all become.

I don't mean this in a bad way, of course! Ethical concerns aside... I just hope that as the price of memory drops, the possibility of copying our memories onto a digital medium becomes a true reality. It's one of the things I really wish I could see in my lifetime.

Hello people,

What online fanzines do you read and would recommend?

For all you punkrock folks out there I recommend The Enough Fanzine. It is one of the first hardcore zines on the www.

They have throusands of reviews from the most underground bands all over the world. Check them out online: Enough Fanzine. Best of it all, they are 100% non-profit and just helping the scene!

Looking forward to your recommendations.

Regards!

That says something uncommonly outstanding with the prerequisite of the ethical life: that it is based on a conviction in the fitful and on a willingness to be exposed; it's based on being more like a weed than like a jewel, something fairly fragile, but whose extremely item handsomeness is inseparable from that fragility.
