I love you, hate you, love you, hate you, love you...

I have a fantasy about pubs and clubs in the early 70s. You know, the Wheeltappers type, somewhere you might perhaps find on a caravan park in Blackpool or 'down the Legion', or, loathe as I am to say it, the kind embodied in Phoenix Nights.

Fag smoke, swirly wallpaper, raffle, a turn or two, everyone in their finery for a night out. I never went to one of these places, not in the evening at least, so my fantasy is, the jukebox between 1970 and '75 might have looked something like this ipod playlist below (sorry, I don't know how to attach MP3s/4s or I would). It's easy listening, stuff brought back from holidays abroad, something slightly Eurovisiony, instrumentals, light country, some of those Fifties and Sixties rereleases that all made the charts again in the early 70s, and more. Club acts would probably have done their own interpretations of quite of few of these songs.

I was inspired to create this by the 1973 Top of The Pops chart rundown on the fantastic blog by Planet Mondo. Look! There's Wink Martindale (whenever I think of him I always think of his pic here, as do I Ringo Starr in the album), Perry Como, Max Bygraves, an Opp Knocks winner and others incongruously nuzzling up to Gary Glitter, Family, Bob Dylan, The Sweet and Mud, etc.

I'm glad I got that off my chest. But whatever you do, don't call it cheese!

FC thanks for the link up - what a perfect playlist

I'd recommend checking out Working Mens Soul
http://www.licoricesoul.com/

A compilation of tracks (originals and covers )by the acts that used to play these clubs, it's a jamboree bag of goodies.

Divshare is the way to go with uploading and embedding tracks all free and unlimted storage too. Here's a link to an FC related nugget.

http://www.divshare.com/download/2883290-043

And could also imagine these dusty nuggets on the jukebox
No Matter What - Badfinger
Spiders And Snakes - Jim Stafford
The Son of Hickory Holler's Tramp - O C Smith
Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves - Cher
Down By The Lazy River - The Osmonds
It's In His Kiss - Linda Lewis
Rose Garden - Lynn Anderson
Year Of Decision - The Three Degrees
Harry Chapin - W.O.L.D

Have enjoyed a visit over to Planet Mondo F-C, so thanks. On a similar theme to the Five Centres audio clip, here's a link to some old cinema ads.
'Do Yourself a Favour' and at 2.45 you'll find a complete gem for Fry's 'Medley', the original name for Five Centres. Such a Tommy Steele take-off; looks like it was shot in the local fine fare! Pretty hot checkout girl at the end as well.
The rest of the ads in the clip are great too, nerve tonics for your depression, girdles for your waistline and the final 'local ads', with - yes of course - the local Indian restaurant. Superb.

Ooh,that's made me very happy. I've just got hold of that record by The Fantastics, which reminds me of almost killing myself in a car crash on the way to a friend's wedding in Sussex whilst listening to it. And the reception turned into a bit of a car-crash, too.

THanks for that OP, most enjoyable.

Music and cars very often don't mix for you, do they Clair!

I think you should start a club night with this playlist, F-C. In fact, you could just call it Club Night.

I'd be there.

...apart from Loud Music In Cars by Billy Bremner!

The youtube treat I'm busting to track down is an old cartoon cinema ad, that ended with the phrase "'ere Bert this is the place[add name of local carpet/car sales shop]"

My chief memory of the clubland of my childhood was the number of 'Take my wife' comedians who ended their act by singing 'My Life' by Billy Joel. As an adult, I realise the significance. They clearly believed that they were the guy who gave it all up for "a stand-up routine in LA". As I grew up in Surrey, they must have meant Lower Addiscombe.

I only caught the arse end of it, but it was fab. Meat raffles, "Maggie's den - number 10!", the organ and drums duo with the drummer playing everything as a military two-step, C&W singers in full rhinestone gear who turned up in a Morris Marina coupe and talked in a thick Brummie accent until the mic was switched on. As much as I struggle to like Peter Kay as a personality, he got Phoenix Nights absolutely spot on, the ents secretary who sang 'Delilah' every week - causing ripples of shock and derision every bit as potent as 'What the fuck's Britney up to?' when he swapped his greaser's quiff for a shaggy perm. Jerry St Clair and Brian Potter were real, take it from me. Give me a half-pint of lemonade and a bag of plain crisps, my memory will supply the smell of fags and the sound of the bingo blower.

You want Bimbo Jet? Here's the TOTP orchestra doing a cover.

Fuck yes. If you ever want to make this a reality, F-C, I can get a house band together very quickly.

The Last Farewell is marvellous. The version by Elvis Presley is a bit daring and rich, given that it goes on about "old England" and its mists and hills and dells. he should have changed it to "old Scotland", obviously.
